Pastor, wife and sister dies in road fatality in NY

A minivan carrying 14 members from a tiny Bronx church blew out a rear tire and crashed on the New York State Thruway Saturday, killing the church bishop, his wife and four others

A church Bishop for a Bronx church Simon White along with his wife Zelda and four other parishioners died after the minivan they were travelling in crashed on the New York State Thruway.

The deadly accident apparently occurred after the van  rear tire apparently blew out near the Woodbury Commons Mall in Orange County and the vehicle, a 1997 Ford van, is said to have rolled several times.

The parishioners were said to be on their way to celebrate the second anniversary of an affiliated church upstate, the First Light Christian Assemblies Inc.

Some of the 14 persons on board who were from The Joy Fellowship Christian Assemblies church in Eastchester, were thrown out of the damaged vehicle as it hurtled toward the grassy median.

The other persons declared dead on the spot were Associate Pastor Titus Mc Ghie, Avril Murrray, Evelyn Fergusson and Elaine Reid sister of Pastor White.

The Pentecostal church a pentecostal has only 60 members, mostly of them Jamaican immigrants, was founded by White in 1998.

The Arrow passes on


Known to the world as ‘Arrow’, 56-year -old Alphonsus Edmund “Arrow” Cassell, died on Wednesday morning apparently losing an almost two year battle with Cancer.

Originally from Monsterrat’s Arrow will long to remembered for his mega hit soca tune ‘Hot, Hot, Hot’.

Arrow who began singing professionally in the late 1960’s was runner up in the Montserrat Calypso Competition in 1969, the next year he won the title. He went on to release ‘Dance with me, woman’ in 1972, 1973,74 and 75 saw him continuing to shine.

Later Arrow became a business in his native Montserrat, when The Soufriere Hills volcano eruption destroyed that business he migrated to Salem.

Last week Arrow was said to be rushed to Antigua for medication reasons.

A Vincentian is among six persons who perished recently in a blaze that many think could go down as ‘one of Barbados worst human tragedies’.

Vincentain Kellisha Ollivierre 24, originally from Kingtown Hill in SVG, and resided at of Wellington Street, The City; Barbados, was among the six persons who died in the Campus Trendz blaze at Tudor Street in The City.

Ollivierre was one of three of the clothing store’s employees and three shoppers who perished in the blaze which according to the Barbados police began after two robbers,’ in view of shocked customers, threw an incendiary device into Campus Trendz’ just before 7 p.m., after robbing the business place of an undisclosed amount of cash.

Emplyees Shanna Griffith, 18, Pearl Amanda Cornelius, 18, shoppers were Kelly-Ann Welch, 24, Tiffany Harding, 23, and Nikita Belgrave, 23 were the other victims.

A female supervisor also had to be treated on the scene for several cutlass wounds, believed to have been inflicted by one of the robbers.

It is believed that following the cutlass attack by the robbers and the subsequent explosion, the persons  inside Campus Trendz  panicked and ran to the back of the building, trapping themselves in the process.

One week after the incident, to mark the tragedy Barbados  “pause and pray” at noon(midday) as a mark of respect for lives lost in last Friday’s tragic fire in Tudor Street.

The Prime Minister David Thompson requested that all activity on the island, “including speech and movement of individuals and vehicular traffic, come to a standstill for three minutes, as the country reflects on this most dastardly incident and commiserates with families of the deceased’.

In a statement, the PM said he shared the pain, sadness and outrage of all Barbadians, and has placed the full support of  Government at the disposal of the Royal Barbados Police Force to “crack this case and bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice”.

The  Government’s Cabinet sub-committee was also to hosting an emergency meeting to review all laws, practices and penalties in so far as such is required, since the tragedy.

The Barbados police are said to still looking for the suspects.

SVG Commissioner of Keith Miller has since spoken out against the tradegy and said, its a highly serious matter.

A colorful blend of the islands took to Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, New York,  last Monday to mark the 2010 West Indian American Day WIAD Carnival Parade.
The festivites said to be mainly peaceful saw the coming alive of the Caribbean culture as colorfully dressed dancers and music-blaring floats parade in the street as well as food stalls dishing out everything Caribbean, from  jerk chicken/pork and oxtail stew to fresh-squeezed juices.
For many the parade was more than just a good party, ” it gave them a chance to feel their roots and pass them along to their children.

While rivalliers parties, on lookers with flags and other symbols of their nationality lined the streets to take it all in.

Monday’s parade was the climax to the WIAD Labor Day activites with included Kiddies Carnival, Panorama and King and Queen of the bands.

St Lucian National Soccer Star shot in NY

A 27-year-old St Lucian National Player who is part of the squad competing in the Digicel Caribbean Football Tournament in Brooklyn NY, was last Sunday shot and killed in New York.
Just hours after scoring the winning goal that that helped the St Lucia team to the Championships set for this Sunday 5th August,2010, Isidore Phillip Tisson was shot while sitting in a parked vehicle outside a cafe, in the Crown Height section of Brooklyn, where he’d stopped after leaving a nearby nightclub.
Tissons and his teammates following their win at the Thomas Jefferson High School Playing Field, had been celebrating their second entry in 16 years, into the finals of the Caribbean football competition. It was the goal from Tisson that saw his team defeat St Kitts 1-nil to get into the finals against 6 times defending Champions Jamaica.
A single bullet is said to have ripped through Tisson’s head while he was in the company of 24-year-old Shawnette Justin and three other females.
Reports are that the bullet exited Tisson and grazed Justin who was also in the back seat while the soccer star, Justin had to be taken to Brookdale Hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Tisson,  the father of a 3-year-old girl was a center-forward and a substitute for St Lucia National team when they attempt to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
A grieving St Lucia soccer team have said that they will play Sunday championship match in honor of their slain star player.
A fund has since been set up by officials of the Digicel Cup to assist with Tisson’s burial.
President of the Caribbean Cup, Fred Ballantyne has said that its a major loss to the team and to the league and have asked the community to come out and support the teams for the final championship game.

Tossin reported have been in New York since May while preparing for the tournament.
