Steel and Glitter at Victoria Park tonight

Tonight  Thursday 30th June, 2011, the stage at Victoria Park, is set for the  Steel and Glitter Show as Vincy mas get into high gear.
A three in one package, persons will get a glimpses of not just the senior Steel Orchestra, but also the Mas Bands Section of the Year, plus a new addition “Soca Dance Off”.
Expected to participated in this year’s National Panorama Competition, is Dynamics Stars out of Union Island, who will make their dubbed at Panorama, coming back after a two year absence is Starlift Steel Orchestra, they will join the National Lotteries Authority (NLA) Sion Hill Euphonium Steel Orchestra, the Potential Steel Orchestra, the Elite Steel Orchestra and the South East Steel Orchestra.
The 12 Mas Bands vying for Section of the Year title are defending champions Guinness/Y De Lima/Hitz FM 103.7 Blonde Bird & Friends, KFC Heineken Dragons, SVG General Services Players International, Digicel / Hitz FM 103.7 Nelson Bloc, Aunt Jobe’s Market/ Metrocint General Insurance Co Ltd High Voltage Mas Band,  Sting Power-Searchlight Tribes Carnival Band, Imagination, Ahdrenalin Mas, Melbourne Artisans, Xtreme Fanatics, Owen Ralph and the Professionals, and Beautex International.
Despite being registered for the 2011 competition, Mirage Production will not be competing in the sections of the band category.
Five dance groups are expected to compete in the dance off.
Patrons will get an opportunity to see the Miss Carival Contestants as they will make an appearance.
The first 100 persons entering Victoria Park gets the opportunity to win tickets to the Miss Carival and Soca Monarch Shows on Friday 2nd July and Saturday 3rd July respectively.
Iron Giants pan side out of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), along with GAO, the New Sensation band and Godfrey Dublin are all guest artistes on tonight’s show.

Newly crowned East St George Calypso winner, Javelle ‘Lady Diamond’ Frank of the P’tani tent along with Aurella “Queen B’ Beache,  from the Upstage Tent,  made their debut into the finals of the National Calypso competition in grand style.
Both successfully carried on the torch for the women folk, following last Friday’s semi finals, dubbed” Fantastic Friday” , which was staged at the La Croix Boxing Plant.
Lady Diamond rendered “Teach us about Africa”, while Queen B dished out her “ Protest fuh Dat”.
Much to the delight of many, Elliott ‘Mystery’ Shallow is back after a number of years out of the competition. Mystery who also sing with the P’’tani tent is making a journey that he know very well as he has been in the final on many occasions.
His “rural and urban cry”, got the judges’ nod, and a place to challenge for the monarch.
Michael ‘Lord of Mercy’  Ollivierre, has made the journey back and it has taken him straight to the finals also. The 1980 calypso monarch, will add his second to” What we gonna do, which has got him thus far.
Newcomer to the Big Yard, Shernelle ‘Skarpyon’ Williams along with Maxwell ‘Tajo’ Francis, join veterans Glenroy ‘Sulle’ Ceasar, Carlos ‘Rejector’ Providence,  Kingsley Hero’ Roberts and Elvis ‘Abijah’ Abbey to complete the list.
At last Friday’s show “ Skarypon” sang “Pan Dream”, while “Tajoe”, recalled the “ Memoirs of an addict”.
Sulle rendered, “  Counting Chickens”, Rejector unleashed “ Hairouna”:Hero with his “ Mental Environment”, and Abijah in his usual biting social commentary, “ In this round”, were approved for the final rung to the ladder of being crown Calypso Monarch of St. Vincent and the Grenadines for 2011.
 The ten all come to the finals at “Carnival  City’ Victoria Park on July 3, prepared to stop Bridgette ‘Joy-C’ Creese, from doing the hat-trick. 

Fourteen for Ragga Soca

Fourteen persons are set to compete in the Vincy Ragga Soca Show at Vinctorai Park on next Friday 24th June, 2011 at 9 pm.

The fourteen were selected following the Preliminaries held at the Carnival Development Corporation’s (CDC) Office at Victorai Park.

The final list is Bomani, Colombian, Daneel, Daria, Dennis, Ellegance, Fya Empress, Gao, Johnny Rebel,  Lawyer Boy,  Maddzart, Problem Child, Poorsah and  Skarpyon.

The top fourteen were picked from fifty songs submitted. Delroy ‘Fireman’ Hooper is the reigning champion.

Busy Signal out of  Jamaica is expected to be the guest artist at the show.

News Flash- Burton Williams on bail

Burton Williams

Reports out of SVG are that former NDP representative for South Windward Burton Williams, who during the 2010 election again ran on the NDP Ticket,  is said to be on $25,000 bail after appearing in the Kingstown Magistrates Court today. Apparently Williams was charged with attempting to damage public property.

Williams charged stemmed from an incident during one of the protests staged outside Parliament by NDP when the authorities had closed the main gate, he and others had apparently attempted to push the gate down.

Cavalier and Middlesex one up in BCL

Action in the Brooklyn Cricket League (BCL),will continue this weekend when Vincy-based Queensbury face off against Challengers on Saturday 11th, at Marine Park (Mpk)C.

Other matches set for Saturday are at Mpk A -Pak Kashmir vs Jinnah, Mpk B-Shaheen vs    Wanderers, Mpk D-Carriacou vs Bk Knights while at SeaView St. Lucia will play Panthers.

On Sunday 12th June at Mpk A, Cavaliers is set to play Brooklyn Knights, while Imperial will play Grenada at Mpk C.

The other two matches are at, Mpk B-Bk Stars vs Warriors and at Seaview (SW) its Wanderers vs Diplomats.

Last  week Sunday 5th June in the match at Mpk A, Grenada vs Cavaliers, Grenada batting first and made 103, R Murray 21 and C Peters 2. Timothy Warner 7 overs 28 runs 2 wks, R Bynoe 7- 27- 1, Cameron Cuffy 4-14-2 and Ephram Bacchus 34-14- 5.
Replying Cavalier 104, Albert Tesheira top scoring with 48.  Bowling for Grenada D Alexander 6 overs 2 wks, M Baptiste 3- 1 wk, G Anthony 6- 1, R Murray 6-1. Cavaliers winning by 5 wks. 

Also playing on Sunday were, Brooklyn Stars vs Middlesex at Marine Park B, Middlesex won the toss and ask Brooklyn Stars to take first strike. Brooklyn Stars 168 for 9 from 32 overs. Waqaz Shah topped scored with 54, supported Babar who made 22.  Mark Audain 4 for 26 runs from 7 overs, Newly appointed Skipper former USA under 19 player, Dominic Audain 2 for 30 from 7 overs, off spinner Treldon “Keegan” Mc Millan 1 for 21 in 4 overs, Ron Rameshwar 1 for 22 from 6 overs, and Windwards Islands player Donwell Hector 1 for 31 from 6 overs.

In their turn at the crease Middlesex 169 for 4, Mark Audain 56 not out, he batted through the inning, Skipper  Audain 39, Windwards Island player Hector 34. Middlesex winning by 6 wickets.

While the other two vincy based counterpart when one up, Imperial in their match against Shaheen at Mpk C was not so successful. 

Imperial – 215 for 5 in 32 overs (3 overs lost for being late), Kester Sylvester  topscoring with  57, 15 years-old Bjorn Brown – 55, Foster Lewis – 46 and Shamroy Primo – 25 not out.

Awais Butt – 2 wickets 36 runs in 7 overs.

Shaheen replied with 217 for 7 in 34.3 overs, Ashan Aftab – 59 not out, Akram Khan 39 and Danyal Waeed – 30. O. Mofford 55 for 3 and Kester Sylvester 36 for 2 wkts.

Miss Caribbean Amercia Culture Pageant tomorrow

Seven Ladies are set to take the stage in the second annual Caribbean American Cultural (CAC) Beauty Pageant at Wingate Campus, this Saturday June 11th, 2011 at 6;oopm.

Selected from around the region, are Yanique Crawford representing Jamaica, Knia Antoine- Grenada, Kurtlyn Baker-Guyana, Carla Francois is St Lucia’s representative, Jolene Farrell represents the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago, while Ashnique Gumbs and Tatianna John will represent St Vincent and the Grenadines.
This event which will see ladies from different Caribbean country via for the coverted title, aims to raised funds for the school to assist with scholarship. It is also geared at raising funds for the Antillian sports and Cultural Clubs and Mariners soccer club, as well as to assist the ladies with building their self esteem.
According to Co-ordinator of the show Yvonne Peters, the event araised from ‘the young ladies in netball club asking for an event, geared at young adults and teenagers, hence the idea and then the event.”
Peters explained that NY is a “diverse community with various cultures and it gaves the young people with Caribbean roots the opportunity to get involved and learn more about their roots.”

Up for grabs are Miss CAC, 1st runner up,  second runner up, Miss Photogenic and Miss Congeniality.

Four newcomers in Vincy mas Semi’s

Four newcomer will grace the stage in this year’s Calypso semi- final as they vie for a place in the finals and the coveted title of Calypso Monarch for Vincy Mas 2011.
Of these newcomers, three of these Javelle ‘Lady Diamond’ Frank, Glenroy ‘Sachy’ Samuel and Jerome ‘Parry’ Samuel, hails from the P’tani Calypso tent also veteran calypsonian Elliot ‘Mystery’ Shallow in a come back who to is in the Semi’s.
The other newcomer is Kahalia ‘Queen B’ Beache, who hails from the Upstage Calypso Tent, which took the most semi-finalist picks, the others from Upstage are Michael ‘Lord Have Mercy’ Ollivierre, who is alos back after many years. Shernelle ‘Skarpyon’ Williams, Fitzroy ‘Brother Ebony’ Joseph, Alpheus ‘Observer’ Duncan and Ronald ‘Ron B’ Browne are the others from that tent.
Out of the Graduates come Glenroy ‘Sulle’ Caesar, Maxwell ‘Tajoe’ Francis, Kingsley ‘Hero’ Roberts, George ‘Jah Burke’ Nedd, , and Linton ‘Sweet 16’ Samuel.
Leader of On Tour Grantley ‘Ipa’ Constance joined his other members Derrick ‘Man Sick’ Alexander, Elvis ‘Abijah’ Abbey,and Robbie ‘Soharo’ Hackshaw
New York based Dynamites Calypso Tent got three picks in Errol ‘D Man Age’ Rose, Carlos ‘Rejector’ Providence and Dennis Bowman.
The semi-finals deviates from the norm of the Victoria Park and will take place at the La Croix Palletisation, on what is dubbed ” Fantastic Friday” , June 17th, beginning at 8 pm.
Eleven calypsonians will be chosen for the July 3 finals against two time reigning monarch Joyce ‘Joy C’ Creese, who will be attempting to capture the hat-trick.
